The Lieutenant Colonel Bernard W. Dibbert Carolina Covenant for Military Families Endowed Scholarship Fund was made possible by a $2 million gift from the UNC General Alumni Association.

The new scholarship announced last week targets loan debt from military-affiliated UNC – Chapel Hill scholars and will cover tuition debt for 25 students.

At the scholarship’s announcement in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center last Monday, alumni association President Doug Dibbert praised the gift.

“Carolina remains proudly committed to access and affordability, which is especially important to military families,” Dibbert said. “I cannot think of anything our volunteer association leaders could do that more pleases me than to honor my father by assuring that there forever will be Carolina Covenant students from military families with scholarships that bear our dad’s name.”

The alumni association named the endowment to honor its current, Dibbert, and his father, Army Lt. Col. Bernard W. Dibbert, who served in World War II and the Korean War before dying during the Vietnam War as a company commander with the 82nd Airborne.

Stephen Farmer, Vice Provost for Enrollment and Undergraduate Admissions. He also said at the announcement that the Carolina Covenant, now in its fifteenth year, was the first of its kind at a public university.

“Over the last four entering classes, almost 3000 new Covenant Scholars have joined us here on campus. These students earned their places at our university.”

This gift also contributes to the Red, White and Carolina Blue Challenge, which was rolled out during the launch of UNC’s $4.25 billion fundraising campaign in October 2017. That challenge was kick-started with a gift and a challenge to raise money for need-based aid for children of military families.
