A pair of figures within the UNC Hussman School for Journalism and Media were each named presidents of journalism committees this week.
Raul Reis, the school’s new dean, was named the president of the Association of Schools of Journalism & Mass Communication. Professor Deb Aikat was named the president of the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication.
Reis and Aikat were both honored at the 105th Annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference, which is being held this week in Detroit. In addition, each participated in various panels highlighting such issues as representation in journalism and the COVID pandemic.
Reis officially became dean of the Hussman School in July after being named to the position in March. He was previously the dean of the School of Communication at Emerson College and a journalist in both Brazilian and America publications.
Aikat has been a member of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism faculty for 27 years and has received numerous awards and honors for both his teaching and research. Previously, Aikat served as vice president of the AEJMC in the 2020-21 school year before being installed as president for this year.
