Raul Reis, dean and professor of the School of Communication at Emerson College, was named dean of the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Reis will assume the position July 1.

“I am humbled and honored to have been chosen to serve as the next Dean of the Hussman School, which is home to some of the top journalism and media programs and initiatives in the country,” Reis said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited by the prospect of moving to North Carolina, and working side by side with this incredible group of award-winning faculty, staff and students. I would like to thank the Hussman community and the UNC leadership team for the warm welcome extended to me, and look forward to being there with all of you soon.”

Prior to working at Emerson, Reis served as dean and professor of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University and was tenured at California State University, Long Beach.

Reis has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Universidade Federal do Pará in Brazil, a master of science in journalism and mass communication from Kansas State University and a doctorate in communication and society from the University of Oregon.

In a message sent to the campus community, Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and Provost J. Christopher Clemens said Reis joins the Hussman School in an exciting time.

“The school recently surpassed a $75 million goal within the university’s $4.25 billion Campaign for Carolina, and this spring it will open the state-of-the-art Curtis Media Center, billed as the nation’s leading media and journalism education technology hub,” UNC leadership said. “Reis is well poised to continue the school’s positive trajectory.”

Former Dean Susan King left the position in December 2021. Heidi Hennik-Kaminiski has served as the school’s interim dean since January 1.

Meenakshi Gigi Durham and Chris Roush were the two other finalists for the position.
