Work has been completed to replace a bridge that crosses Phils Creek in southern Orange County and Old Greensboro Road has reopened.
The roadway closed between Jones Ferry and Neville roads on April 9 and detours were established in each direction. The closure was expected to be in effect until November, but a North Carolina Department of Transportation engineer confirmed on Tuesday that the road is now open, adding that contractors may be called back for some follow-up work to smooth any rough patches that develop.
DOT officials said when announcing the closure that the bridge no longer met the needs of modern day traffic after it was built in 1978.
“The work includes elevating the bridge by two feet and adding new bicycle lanes in each direction,” Division 7 board member and chairman for the NCDOT Michael Fox said in a previous release. “This will increase safety by improving sight-distance as well as improve connectivity for drivers and bicycle riders in this community.”
The project received $984,000 as part of DOT’s bridge program, officials previously said, to improve the overall condition of the state’s bridges and ensure the safety of drivers.
