A crash along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Chapel Hill closed the busy road for several hours as crews repaired damaged traffic signals and power lines.

Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard fully reopened before 5 p.m. on Wednesday after its northbound lanes closed between Weaver Dairy Road and Stateside Drive. The thoroughfare’s southbound lanes had reopened around 2:30 p.m. to traffic, but much traffic had been detoured down Weaver Dairy Road Extension and Homestead Road for the afternoon.

Chapel Hill Police initially alerted the community to the closure shortly before 11 a.m. on Wednesday. According to a photo shared by the department, a dump truck was involved in the crash — and had power lines for the traffic lights wrapped around part of it. Police clarified it was traffic lights at Westminster Drive that were damaged in the incident.

Police said there were no reports of injuries from the crash.

A spokesperson for the Chapel Hill Police Department said despite the road being reopened, road travelers should expect to still see crews doing repairs at the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard intersection with Westminster Drive on Thursday.
