Two individuals were killed in a wreck on I-85 northbound in Orange County Wednesday.

Officials with the Highway Patrol confirmed the fatalities to WCHL just after four o’clock Wednesday afternoon. The crash was first reported by North Carolina Department of Transportation officials around 2:30 p.m. and involved one vehicle. The wreck shut down the right-hand lane of I-85 north for approximately two miles around Hillsborough for several hours.

Authorities said that the vehicle went off of the roadway and down an embankment due to the crash.

Troopers identified the two victims late Wednesday night, according to multiple outlets, as 19-year-old Corena Johnson, of Mebane, and 19-year-old Kelleigh Shropshire, of Haw River.

Authorities say speed was the primary cause of the crash.
