In an effort to create a safer space for pedestrians, the Town Of Chapel Hill will paint designated “walking lanes” in a neighborhood this week.
The lanes will be located on the north side of Honeysuckle Road from Brookview Drive to Booker Creek Road, on the west side of Booker Creek Road from Honeysuckle Road to the Booker Creek Trail and on the north side of Cleland Drive from Hayes Road to Burning Tree Drive.
They will be a dedicated space for people walking on streets without sidewalks and will be at least five feet wide. The lanes will be placed at the edge of the road and marked with permanent street paint.
In February of last year, the town piloted its first temporary in-road ‘street path’ on Honeysuckle Road and Booker Creek Road. According to the town, the six-foot street path on the side of the street is intended to delineate an area for people to walk, run and roll on a road that does not have dedicated sidewalks or bicycle facilities.
The street path is marked with tape, reflective cones and signage.
The town encourages drivers to treat all walking lanes as any other lane marked with a solid white line. The lanes are not intended for parking or driving.
Painting will take place through this week, weather permitting, and the Town of Chapel Hill said minor traffic delays may occur. The full town release can be found here.

Or, here’s a thought, put in actual sidewalks to get pedestrians AWAY from automobile traffic?
If Chapel Hill wants to get to ZERO pedestrian fatalities, it must have sidewalks ON BOTH SIDES of every road in town.
No payment in lieu from developers that are too lazy to build them when they develop a property and just one side is not sufficient in a modern community that cares about equity.
Your joking right? Paint the road a section for people to walk on. What’s gonna stop a careless driver from swerving onto said lanes? At least with actual sidewalks, the car would grind on the curb or hop on it and the driver would definitely notice. Imagine at night. Wow. What a terrible decision.
Roads are 102″ wide per lane , This is not a decision of common sense .
