The UNC Police Department is investigating an attempted suicide at Granville Towers.

UNC Police received a call at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning and responded to an incident at Granville Towers South, according to UNC Media Relations. The crime log for the UNC Police Department was updated later on Sunday to reflect an attempted suicide.

The UNC Police crime log describes incidents as they are first reported to the police. The description in the crime log does not reflect the conclusion of a police investigation, said UNC Media Relations.

UNC Police logs reported the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. The investigation is still ongoing.

With Sunday’s incident marking the second suicide investigation at UNC this weekend and the third of the fall semester, university leadership issued a release Sunday night cancelling classes on Tuesday, October 12.

UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz wrote the day will serve as a Wellness Day for students.

“We are in the middle of a mental health crisis, both on our campus and across our nation, and we are aware that college-aged students carry an increased risk of suicide,” wrote Guskiewicz. “This crisis has directly impacted members of our community – especially with the passing of two students on campus in the past month. As chancellor, a professor and a parent, my heart breaks for all those whose suffering goes unnoticed.”

The chancellor also announced that, beginning on Tuesday, the upcoming week will see university resources come together to “create a special support network” for all members of the campus community to process recent events or discuss their mental health. He also shared that a mental health summit of UNC faculty, staff and student leaders is set to be held later in October to discuss the national mental health crisis among college-aged students. Additionally, a campus-wide campaign to promote and support mental health awareness will soon launch.

Guskiewicz said University Day, which is also on Tuesday, will still hold an event at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall to recognize UNC’s history. To read the chancellor’s full message to the campus community, visit the university’s website.

UNC Police have not released the name of the individual involved in the Granville Towers incident. No other information is available as of Sunday night.
