Lane closures are expected on Tuesday, July 28 when the Town of Chapel Hill removes a large willow oak tree near Franklin Street.
Chapel Hill’s maintenance staff determined the willow oak tree near 516 E. Franklin St. suffered irreparable storm damage in recent years and needs to be removed.
Before that, a public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on July 22 at the site of the tree. Town staff will provide information about the tree and why it needs to be removed. Face coverings and physical distancing will be required at all times during this meeting.
Signs and cones will be in place to assist traffic through the lane closures, according to the town.
In October 2019, the Town of Chapel Hill removed and replaced two trees on UNC’s campus. Both were aging trees that had sustained damage. A large branch fell from one of the trees on September, falling on two cars — including a Chapel Hill Police car.
