The Chapel Hill Police Department says it is investigating reports and evidence of gunfire in a residential area during Sunday evening.
A release from the department shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday said officers arrived near Caldwell Street and Mitchell Lane after receiving reports of gun shots before 5:30 p.m. While police said there were no victims from gunfire, responding officers found evidence “that shots had been fired in the area.”
Caldwell Street ends and turns into Gomains Avenue near its intersection with Mitchell Lane. The roads are in the Northside neighborhood of Chapel Hill and are close to Northside Elementary School and the Northside Senior Center.
Chapel Hill Police revealed one additional detail in their release: the suspect or suspects may have left the scene in a white Lexus SUV. Sunday’s release said the vehicle may have had rails — similar to a luggage rack — on its roof.
The police department said anyone with information regarding the gunfire is encouraged to call 911, or to call the non-emergency Orange County Communications number (919-732-5063). Additionally, community members who wish to remain anonymous can use the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers hotline at 919-942-7515.
