Two separate gas leaks led to residential streets in Chapel Hill being temporarily closed Tuesday morning.
The Chapel Hill Police Department shared an alert shortly before 10 a.m. saying East Longview Street and Bolin Heights both were closed due to separate reported gas leaks. The roads, which are both off of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, are largely residential.
By 10:10 a.m., the leak on Bolin Heights had been repaired and the road reopened. But Dominion Energy, the gas company responding to the leaks, told Chapelboro that repairs at Longview Street would take longer due to the gas line’s depth in the ground.
Shortly after 11 a.m., Dominion Energy confirmed the second gas line on Longview Street was sealed off. After repairs to the road between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and North Columbia Street were complete Tuesday afternoon, the Chapel Hill Police Department said Longview Street completely reopened around 1:40 p.m.
According to police, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard remained open to traffic the whole morning despite the side street being closed.
Bolin Heights experienced another gas leak not long ago. The road, and part of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, had to be closed in October due to an extended leak. Similarly to the October incident, Dominion Energy confirmed that the two leaks on Tuesday were caused by third-party contractors.
