June is LGBT Pride Month and Carrboro will be holding a “Pride Piper Walk” on Tuesday night celebrating the occasion.
The walk will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at The ArtsCenter and finish with the unveiling of a tribute to former Chapel Hill Town Council member Joe Herzenberg, who was the first openly gay elected official in the South.
“Anyone who wants to join us is welcome,” Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle said, “not sure if we’ll have 20 people or 200, probably somewhere in between.”
Tuesday’s event coincides with events being put on throughout the Triangle by Artists United, a group which was formed to “recognize the role of artists in examining the human condition.”
“It’s going to be an awesome way, I think, to kick off Pride Month,” Lavelle said.
In addition to Orange County, Artists United has events planned in Durham and Raleigh for Pride Month. Local events include the Second Friday Art Walk in Chapel Hill and Carrboro on Friday, June 8, and Last Friday Art Walk in Hillsborough on Friday, June 29.
