A sizable grant will benefit both students at Durham Technical Community College and local low-income families.

The $23,500 grant was recently awarded to Durham Tech by The Bank of America Foundation, and is meant to create a renovation and revitalization construction credential program. The program is meant to provide students with on-the-job training and opportunities for future employment and job placement by teaching renovation skills through hands-on work on the homes of low-income families in the community.

“We are extremely grateful for Bank of America’s generosity,” said Maryah Smith-Overman, Director and Instructor for Construction Trades programs at Durham Tech, in a press release. “The dual impact of renovating and providing a safe residence to community members while educating and training local students is beneficial for all involved.”

The award will make a difference — both in the future of Durham Tech students, as they are more equipped to find employment in a competitive job market, and in the lives of local families who will benefit from improved housing.

The Bank of America Foundation also supported grant projects in 2016 and 2017 from Durham Tech Construction Trades programs. The Foundation aims to increase economic mobility through addressing needs and issues related to the training and development of a functional workforce, while also supporting community development efforts.
