The Town of Hillsborough unveiled its new logo on Wednesday — a reworking of the Historic Orange County Courthouse’s clock tower, which has been a symbol of Hillsborough for many years.
The new logo, which was designed by Alison Duncan of Duncan Design in Pennsylvania, was selected by the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners last spring and was the top pick of four options by respondents to a February 2020 community survey. Its launch, however, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The town board was presented with several excellent options for the brand refresh and ultimately chose to stick with the iconic clocktower image, which was also favored by a plurality of community respondents to the branding survey,” Hillsborough Mayor Jenn Weaver said in a release. “It’s exciting to move ahead with this fresh, clean design.”
Hillsborough’s project to standardize the town’s brand started in 2019 and included developing a logo to match the fonts and color scheme of the town’s wayfinding brand, which was established in 2013 with the installation of wayfinding signage, projected to last 30 years.
The new logo provides a clean representation of the Historic Orange County Courthouse’s clock and cupola. The English clock was given to the town in the colonial era, and the courthouse was designed and built in 1844.
Other logo options the town board considered were a symbol of the quatrefoil derived from the town seal and from the coat of arms of the earl of Hillsborough (an Irish peer for whom the town was renamed in 1766), the Riverwalk greenway built by Hillsborough and now an area attraction, and the front façade of Town Hall, which was built around 1821 and has been used as the center of town government since the 1970s.
With implementation of the refreshed brand, Hillsborough will discontinue use of a 1994 line drawing of the clock tower.
