The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners appointed Robb English as a town commissioner on Tuesday.

The board had been searching for someone to fill the seat of Jenn Weaver on the board, which will become vacant when she is sworn in as mayor on December 9. Commissioners conducted interviews during Monday’s work session with six Hillsborough residents who filled out an online application for the position. Commissioner Mark Bell nominated English, who was approved by the board by a 3-2 vote.

“I’m truly appreciative and honored to have been appointed to serve as a commissioner,” English said. “I want to thank the current board and mayor for the opportunity and I look forward to serving the residents of Hillsborough as a commissioner.”

Mayor Tom Stevens said it was clear all the candidates interviewed were earnestly wanting to make Hillsborough a better town.

“All the interviews were impressive,” he said, “and each candidate brought to the board excellent ideas and perspectives. While all the candidates competed well and it was competitive, Robb English rose to the top based on his longtime experience on the Parks and Recreation Board, completion of the Hillsborough Citizens Academy and his thoughtful answers.”

English, 51, is currently serving his third three-year term on the advisory board, which advises the town on issues related to park facilities and works to implement recommendations in the Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The recreation supervisor for the Town of Chapel Hill, English lives in the Cornwallis Hills neighborhood in the southern section of town and is serving a second term on that neighborhood’s property owners association board. He previously has served on the Charles House Association board and as a special events volunteer for the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association and as a volunteer coach for local recreational organizations.

English will be sworn in the same meeting as when Weaver resigns to assume the position of mayor. His term will last two years.
