The Orange County Recreation Department announced it has canceled all onsite summer camps in 2020.
The county shared a release on Thursday with the news, saying the decision was made after monitoring the COVID-19 virus within the community and based on guidance from public health agencies.
Due to the cancellation, Orange County said full refunds will be issued to parents for summer camp fees that have already been paid.
The county said in place of traditional, in-person camps, it will be offering some of the camps and additional summer enrichment activities online. Thursday’s release said these virtual programs will be conducted live, with the ability for participants to virtually interact with the instructor and other children. Like the in-person camps, each program will have a fee to cover supply costs, but some activity supplies will be delivered to home addresses of children signed up for the program. The online camps are slated to begin June 15.
On Friday, the Town of Chapel Hill announced it would be canceling summer events and programs as well. The Town of Carrboro also announced the same on Monday.
A comprehensive list of cancelled programs, as well as online enrichment opportunities, can be found on the Orange County government’s website.
