Orange County Animal Services announced a new way to help pet owners who may be struggles to make ends meet amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The department shared on Thursday plans for its new Pet Food Assistance Program. According to a release from Animal Services, the program was created to assist county residents who have lost income and are in need of pet food.

While OCAS will work to help as many residents as possible,” said the release, “it is important to note that pet food will only be distributed to Orange County residents as long as it is available.”

The food in the program is largely for dogs and cats, but Animal Services also is providing additional links to emergency relief resources for residents in need of food for farm animals.

In its release, the department also asked the community for help stocking the Pet Food Assistance Pantry to aid the department if demands are high. While in-person drop-offs at the Animal Services Center have been temporarily suspended to protect the health of staff, delivery options are still being accepted. The department has an Amazon Wish List community members can buy from and says any donations may be shipped to the center at 1601 Eubanks Road in Chapel Hill.

Residents may fill out a form on the Orange County website to apply for the Pet Food Assistance Program or can call 919-932-4965.
