Like the rest of North Carolina, Orange County continues to see an increase in its positive COVID-19 cases heading into the Fourth of July weekend.
According to data from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the county recorded 30 new cases on Friday. This brings the total within Orange County to 745 positive cases.
It took less than a week for Orange County to surpass another 100 cases, having reached 600 cases last Saturday.
Orange County’s first positive COVID-19 case was recorded in late March, when a patient at the UNC Medical Center tested positive.
On Friday, North Carolina recorded over 2,000 new cases in a single day for the first time since the pandemic began. The total number of coronavirus cases in North Carolina sits at 70,241 heading into the Fourth of July weekend when many people are expected to be out and about.
This comes a week after the beginning of a statewide mask requirement issued in an executive order from Governor Roy Cooper. Orange County began its own face covering for residents on June 12, but updated elements to fit with the state’s measure.
Authorities are warning that the holiday weekend could be a crucial test of Americans’ self-control that could determine the trajectory of the virus outbreak. Within Orange County, many in-person events and firework celebrations have been canceled.
