The Hillsborough Historic District Commission is presenting its 2021 Preservation Award to Allied DevCorp, LLC for its renovation of The Colonial Inn.

An award ceremony will be held outdoors at the inn, located at 153 W. King Street, at 6:30 p.m. on June 15.

The Colonial Inn, which dates to 1838, fell into disrepair after little use for many decades – with it being deemed uninhabitable in 2012. Despite this, the Town of Hillsborough took efforts to prevent the historic site from demolition. Allied DevCorp bought the property in January 2018 and have since improved the space to once again be a functioning inn with event space for rent.

The inn reopened in November 2020 following an extensive two-year restoration effort.

According to the town, during The Colonial Inn’s renovation process, much of the original construction was uncovered and documented. Whenever possible, renovation and construction sought to preserve original materials and methods. To preserve the original structure’s architecture, additional sleeping rooms were added in a separate but compatible two-story building in the rear.

Winners of the 2020 Preservation Awards will also be recognized at the June 15 ceremony at the Colonial Inn as no ceremony was held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Winners in 2020 included Bellevue Mill, LLC for the renovation of the Bellevue Mill complex at 206 S. Nash Street as well as artist Max Dowdle and the owners of Volume Records & Beer for a mural of jazz composer Billy Strayhorn on the north wall of the business.

The town said while it is possible there will be a quorum of Historic District Commission members in attendance at the award ceremony, a meeting will not be held, and no business will be conducted.
