The Town of Chapel Hill recently shared updates to street renovations and projects downtown, saying one is completed, one is beginning soon and another is postponed.
A release was shared with the Chapel Hill community on Wednesday, saying the resurfacing and restriping of West Franklin Street has been postponed until next summer. The North Carolina Department of Transportation had to delay the project due to funding challenges presented by COVID-19, according to the message. The town is planning to do lane reallocation, creating a bike lane on the popular street. Designs can be found on the Town of Chapel Hill website.
Meanwhile, the town recently completed a separate project on West Franklin Street. Minor sidewalk repairs at 452 and 462 West Franklin Street were finished, including leveling areas where trees were felled in recent years and installing cement pavers.
One more street project’s schedule was updated: the replacement of the existing side of the road for the 100 blocks of both North Graham Street and North Roberson Street. The town said it will be building new or replacing the sidewalks, amenity strips, retaining walls, curbs and gutters. The goal of the project is to increase pedestrian mobility and safety by promoting accessibility, consistency and visibility while using the sidewalks. The project is expected to start later this month and last four to six months.
The release did not indicate whether traffic patterns along the two roads would be altered.
