Originally expected to be closed from April 14 to April 28, construction on Carrboro’s Estes Drive/North Greensboro roundabout will continue due to delays and complications in construction.
Detours will continue to route traffic towards Hillsborough Road and West Main Street to and from the center of downtown, and the intersection will remain closed to travel to and from Estes Drive.
“They’ve really been drilling incessantly for several days and the neighbors are on edge and I can’t say I blame them,” said Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle. “It was never anticipated, of course, that folks would be home and trying to teach and trying to work and have kids while all this was going on.”
According to Lavelle, the “heavy drilling” currently being performed by DOT contractors is necessary to complete the project — which was always expected to be complicated by underground utilities, including a large stormwater channel under the intersection.
“We have been fielding a lot of complaints — well-founded complaints, really — from folks in the area and relaying those to the [Department of Transportation] in an effort to have them try to mitigate this somewhat,” said Lavelle. “But it’s kind of like the only way around it is through it.”
While some adjustments are being made in an attempt to assuage public discomfort, such as the DOT contractors suspending work over this upcoming weekend, those adjustments also mean that the end date is pushed further back.
“I just ask folks for your patience in trying to get that project done,” said Lavelle. “The sooner that gets bored out, the sooner we can move along … It’s just one more example of how hard it is to have even little everyday projects move forward, everyday life kind of go on, through the lens of everything else that we’re all dealing with.”
Construction on the Estes Drive/ North Greensboro roundabout began in August 2019 and is expected to be completed by September 2021.
