A recent fire at a Carrboro townhome complex was caused by the improper disposal of “smoking materials,” according to the Carrboro Fire Department.
A release from the town government on Friday said the department responded to a structure fire with “visible flames” on Thursday, July 7 around 5 p.m. Upon arrival to 101 Rock Haven Road, firefighters found a six-unit townhome building with smoke coming from one unit.
According to the release, fire crews brought the blaze under control in approximately 15 minutes, with damage limited to two units. The unit with fire damage on its second floor and attic was ultimately deemed uninhabitable, while an adjacent unit sustained water and smoke damage.
The Carrboro Fire Department said one resident suffered a minor injury from the fire. They were transported to the hospital by Orange County Emergency Medical Services for further evaluation.
Thursday’s fire marked the second at the Rock Creek Apartment Homes complex in as many months. Eight units were damaged by fire, smoke and water after a bigger fire broke out on June 11. 17 residents were displaced by the incident.
The Carrboro Fire Department said units from the Chapel Hill Fire Department, Orange County Emergency Medical Services and the Carrboro Police Department helped aid response on Thursday.
