Fire officials in Carrboro are investigating the cause of an apartment fire on Saturday night that left one resident injured and 17 displaced.

The fire occurred at 101 Rock Haven Road, not far from Carrboro High School. Crews responded shortly after 8 p.m. to find heavy smoke and flames emerging from a 14-unit apartment building.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within 40 minutes, but not before eight units suffered damage. Officials say only four units experienced fire damage, but four others were damaged by smoke and water.

In all, five emergency departments responded to the fire: the Carrboro Fire Rescue Department, the Chapel Hill Fire Department, the White Cross Fire Department, the North Chatham Fire Department, and the South Orange Rescue Squad.

The American Red Cross is now working to relocate the residents who have been displaced. The cause of the fire still has not been determined, but the building has been deemed uninhabitable, with an estimated $500,000 in damage.

Fortunately the one injured resident suffered only minor injuries; they did not have to be hospitalized.
