An overnight fire damaged several apartments in Carrboro, leaving 18 residents displaced after firefighters fought the blaze for roughly an hour.
A release Thursday morning from the Town of Carrboro detailed its fire department’s response to a structure fire reported around 2 a.m. at 601 Jones Ferry Road — the address of the Ashbrook Apartments community. According to the department, fire crews encountered “heavy smoke and fire conditions on the second and third floors” upon arrival, which led to a second alarm being called and additional firefighters arriving to the scene.
An “aggressive interior fire attack” helped quell the flames, but Carrboro Fire reported multiple apartment units sustained fire damage and several nearby units suffered smoke damage. The early estimated property damage from the incident is $400,000, according to the town.
One resident was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered during the fire, while one firefighter was treated on site for their own minor injury. The town’s release said Ashbrook’s property management group and the American Red Cross are helping the 18 displaced residents find temporary housing, basic necessities and recovery resources in the aftermath of Thursday’s fire. The cause of the fire itself remains under investigation.
In its release, the Carrboro Fire Department thanked the Chapel Hill Fire Department, White Cross Fire Department, North Chatham Fire Department, Orange Grove Fire Department, New Hope Fire Department, the Eno Fire Department, Orange County Emergency Services and the Carrboro Police Department — all of which had emergency responders provide support on Thursday morning.
