Authorities arrested a Carrboro resident Wednesday in connection to a February murder in Chapel Hill’s Camelot Village apartment complex.
The local magistrate charged Donavyn Lee Mayfield, 20, with first-degree murder for the death of Chapel Hill resident Dearie William Bourne on February 19. The Chapel Hill Police Department said a U.S. Marshal’s Task Force took Mayfield into custody Wednesday from an address in Hillsborough. Authorities then booked Mayfield and transferred to the Orange County Detention Center on no bond.
In addition to first-degree murder, Mayfield is charged with kidnapping, breaking and entering, and larceny.
Police arrived to the South Estes apartment complex around 2:40 p.m. on February 19 following reports of gunfire. Bourne, who was 21 years old, died from injuries sustained in the shooting. The Chapel Hill Police Department said at the time the murder did not appear to be a random incident.
Prior to Mayfield’s arrest in connection to Bourne’s death, police arrested a 21-year-old, Jermaine Malik Chance. Chance faces charges of first-degree murder, larceny and two other felonies.
Mayfield first appeared in court on the charges Thursday afternoon.
