What police are describing as a “domestic incident” resulted in the death of a five year old and multiple other injuries at UNC’s Baity Hill family housing community.

UNC Police are investigating after authorities were called to the community just after midnight on Sunday morning, according to an Alert Carolina message.

Additional information provided by the university Sunday evening identified the fatality as the five year old and said that the weapon involved was a knife. Police identified the other residents as the child’s parents – a UNC graduate student and his wife. There is no indication about the seriousness of their injuries.

Law enforcement officials say that there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.

Police added that a suspect is currently receiving medical treatment, as of Sunday evening.

The Baity Hill family housing community is designated for full-time graduate or undergraduate students with a family, according to its website. The community is located near the Dean E. Smith Center between Skipper Bowles Drive and Mason Farm Road.

The UNC Police homicide investigation is ongoing.
