A Chapel Hill man was taken into custody and charged with several offenses after a traffic stop in Hillsborough on Thursday. According to the Hillsborough Police Department, 52-year-old Nathan Devon Brown – a passenger in the stopped vehicle – reached for a gun during the stop.

Police say officers initiated a stop in the southern part of Hillsborough for a traffic violation and “suspicious activity that had been observed before the stop.” During the stop, Brown was ordered out of the vehicle “due to officer safety concerns based on his actions and demeanor.” Brown reportedly refused to comply and reached for a gun in the front pocket of his hoodie. After “a brief physical struggle,” police say Brown was taken into custody without significant injuries to himself or to the officers. According to police, the driver was released with a warning.

Police say Brown is being held at the Orange County Detention Center without bond. His charges include two counts of assault with a firearm on a government official, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of cocaine. Brown was also served with several outstanding warrants and orders for arrest out of Orange and Alamance counties, including felony larceny and five counts of identity theft.
