The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is turning to the public for help identifying a woman whose body was found in Jordan Lake on Tuesday — and who investigators say is likely a homicide victim.

The sheriff’s office shared on Tuesday that it had pulled a human body from the lake near the Farrington Point Boat Ramp, but didn’t share any further details as it began its “preliminary stages” of investigation. In a release on Saturday, it revealed that a boater on Jordan Lake contacted the sheriff’s office around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 29 after spotting a body in the water. Deputies arrived, recovered the body, and opened an investigation into the victim’s identity and circumstances surrounding her death — since Saturday’s release said authorities have determined she died from “neither accidental nor self-inflicted” measures.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office described the victim as a woman who had either Hispanic, Latin American or Middle Eastern heritage. She was 5 feet tall and weighed around 175 pounds. The body was also found wearing clothes, according to investigators: a gray shirt, blue jeans, and a pearl necklace. A pearl earring was also reportedly found near the homicide victim.

To aid the public, the sheriff’s office issued a forensic sketch of what the victim is believed to have looked like, as well as the pearl earring found nearby. The investigators encouraged anyone who may recognized the image or description of someone they know to contact that person to check their wellbeing or contact law enforcement.

“Behind every case, there’s a person who is somebody’s loved one,” Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson said in Saturday’s release. “We urge the public to remember that this victim is someone’s family member, and we are committed to bringing closure to both the victim’s loved ones and our community.”

Additionally, Roberson’s office asked anyone who may have seen suspicious activity around Farrington Point Road, Jordan Lake, or the boat ramp before or on August 29 to contact investigators at 919-542-2911.
