A man who police arrested in June after he broke into an Orange County residence and got attacked by a child wielding a machete received his sentence on Tuesday.

Authorities arrested Jataveon Hall on charges of breaking and entering, second-degree kidnapping and assault on a child under 12. The charges were consolidated on Tuesday at the Orange County Courthouse into a class-C felony. Hall accepted the plea of a 67-93 month sentence.

The charges stemmed from a home invasion on Friday June 14 near Mebane, when Hall broke into a home occupied by an 11-year-old boy named Braydon Smith. The boy escaped a closet after Hall forced him into it and hit Hall in the back of the head with a machete, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

After fleeing the scene, Hall arrived at the UNC Hospital facility in Hillsborough seeking treatment for his injury. He was transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill “due to the severity of [his] wound.” Hall later released himself from the hospital, causing a search for him over the next two days. He was eventually apprehended by Burlington Police on Sunday June 16.

A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Smith and his family attended Hall’s hearing on Tuesday.
