A Fortune 500 company is set to build a new manufacturing facility in Orange County.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. announced Friday it has chosen Mebane as the site for its new facility, which will help create more scientific instruments and supplies. Part of a $192.5 million co-investment with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the building will help address a critical need for laboratory pipette tips, according to a release from the Orange County government.

“The new manufacturing facility will help the U.S. meet future demand surges for vital laboratory products while bringing more high-quality jobs to North Carolina,” said Mark Stevenson, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Thermo Fisher Scientific. “With its strategic geographic location and proximity to a diverse talent base, Mebane is an ideal location for this new facility.”

According to Orange County officials, Thermo Fisher’s facility will be approximately 375,000 square feet and will be in the new Buckhorn Industrial Park, which is located on the corner of Buckhorn Road and West Ten Road. The space is part of Orange County’s Buckhorn Economic Development District.

The Mebane location will be the eighth in North Carolina for Thermo Fisher. The company presently employs around 4,000 people in places like Durham, Raleigh, Asheville, Greenville and High Point. According to Thermo Fisher, the new site is expected to create between 150 and 200 new jobs in manufacturing, engineering and business operations.

That area of Orange County is no stranger to manufacturing workspace and welcoming in nationwide companies. The medical supply distributor Medline Industries is close to finishing a multi-million dollar distribution center near Mebane, while the Swiss technology firm ABB Inc. has operated a manufacturing center in the region for years.“Orange County strives to encourage and support economic development in our county, and we particularly welcome businesses that offer 21st-century jobs with good salaries and career opportunities for our residents,” said Renee Price, Chair of the Orange County Board of Commissioners. “We are pleased to welcome Thermo Fisher Scientific to the community and look forward to seeing this project come to fruition.”

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also shared his thoughts in Friday’s release, pointing to Thermo Fisher’s success in the state as an example of this project’s potential.

“Thermo Fisher continues to expand its footprint in North Carolina,” said Cooper, “reinforcing our state’s global reputation as a prime location for life sciences companies. This new investment in Mebane and Orange County proves once again that North Carolina’s biotechnology sector is thriving in every corner of our state.”

The release from the Orange County government did not include a timeline for the project. To read the full release, visit the county government’s website.
