Another popular establishment on Franklin Street on Chapel Hill has closed its doors.

The Library — a popular bar and club among UNC students — announced via social media that it is closing to “make room for a national brand.”

“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the closing of The Library,” wrote the establishment on Instagram. “Despite maintaining through [the COVID-19 pandemic] and being a town favorite for over 18+ years, we are being forced to close our doors for good to make room for a ‘national brand.’ We appreciate every single person that has been a part of our journey and became part of our family. We love you all.”

In June 2020, a GoFundMe page was created with the title “Bring Library Back Strong!!!” which raised $1,240.

Former UNC basketball star Brice Johnson was among the many current UNC student and alumni who expressed their dismay in the comments of the Instagram post, saying “Noooo how can I buy it?!?”

The Library is the most recent establishment on Franklin Street to permanently close. Earlier this month, Crook’s Corner — a longtime staple of the Chapel Hill community — announced its decision to close. Other restaurants on Franklin Street to close during the COVID-19 pandemic include Blue Spoon Microcreamery, Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe and Lula’s.
