Lula’s on Franklin Street has announced its closure, just over two years after it opened in Chapel Hill.

Lula’s opened in 2018 as the latest concept from the Chapel Hill Restaurant Group. It replaced the iconic eatery Spanky’s, which the company “retired” after more than 40 years in business.

Like many other small businesses, Lula’s was hit hard by restaurant closures during the coronavirus pandemic.

On its Facebook account, Lula’s said it would open on March 21 for curb-side delivery and takeout but later rescinded that note and said it would “temporarily close until there is more clarity and guidance for our small business community.”

Lula’s neighboring restaurant across the street — Lotsa Stone Fired Pizza — announced its closure earlier this year as well.

“We truly loved being a part of the community over the last three years,” said a post by Lotsa. “We tried our best to create a plan that would allow us to stay open. But due to the recent pandemic and lack of business we have no choice but to close down.”
