Dame’s Chicken & Waffles planned for years to bring the popular Durham-based restaurant to downtown Chapel Hill, moving into a space on East Franklin Street in 2019.

Now, after waiting through a turbulent 2020, its doors are opening.

The fourth location of the restaurant known for its fried chicken, waffles and flavored butters called “shmears,” started serving a limited-time menu this week in its spot at 147 East Franklin Street, which the restaurant [B]SKI’s previously housed.

The spot adds to Dame’s other locations in Durham, Greensboro and Cary. Unlike the other three, the Chapel Hill restaurant will be a counter style restaurant instead of a sit-down restaurant.

Under its soft opening, the East Franklin Street location will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. While the limited menu has many of the favorite options for customers, ownership for the business says the spot will eventually have Chapel Hill exclusive menu items.

The Chapel Hill Dame’s Chicken & Waffles is also hiring, which ownership said will affect how soon the business moves to full-time hours and a week-long schedule. Positions for cooks and cashiers are currently available, with the restaurant aiming to be fully opened by mid-May.
