A particular space on Franklin Street once was Pepper’s, used to be Waffle House and sometime soon — potentially as early as summer 2022 — will become a sandwich shop catering to anyone with a hankering for a cheesesteak.
127 East Franklin Street will be seeing another new storefront, as a Chapel Hill franchise of sandwich shop chain Capriotti’s opens for business and starts slinging subs in the near future. There’s not too much in the way of official announcements or social media buzz just yet, but a walk down Franklin confirms the new location.
The Capriotti’s main website features this self-description in an “about us” section:
“Founded in 1976 in Wilmington, Delaware by siblings Lois and Alan Margolet, Capriotti’s was born from a desire to create something unique while honoring family heritage. To this day the whole roast turkeys, quality meats & cheeses, and fresh rolls and produce continue to impress our patrons and earn awards across the country.”
The Waffle House previously in 127 East Franklin Street was one of several restaurants that closed its doors permanently during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Other nearby restaurants that closed in the Chapel Hill downtown were Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe, Lula’s fried chicken and Lotsa Stone Fired Pizza.

So tired of these chain restaurants opening and closing downtown. Remember when residents that are not students had reason to go downtown?
This is the fault of the city, which has done everything in its power to make going downtown at dinnertime a giant hassle. Do not blame the eateries
Boo. I thought the plans were to *not* have any more chain restaurants on Franklin.
