A house fire in northeastern Chapel Hill is causing a road closure on Monday evening amid emergency responders arriving to the scene and fighting the fire.
An alert shared by the Town of Chapel Hill at 5:28 p.m. said Erwin Road from River Birch Lane to Sage Road is closed because of a house fire. A spokesperson for the town said the 911 call came in at 4:43 p.m.
While a pair of adults and six children are displaced by the fire, according to the town government, no injuries have yet been reported from the fire. The victims are being referred to the Red Cross for resources and support.
The closed road, which is near both the Birch Meadow and Presque Isles neighborhoods, can be detoured by taking either Weaver Dairy Road or Sage Road to Dobbins Drive, as well as U.S. Highway 15-501.
Monday’s fire call marks the latest in a spate of house fires in the community. A Chapel Hill resident died from a blaze at their home on Redbud Lane on May 11, while two separate apartment fires in Carrboro displaced dozens of others on April 16 and May 4 — the latter of which also killed one resident. The Chatham County community has also experienced recent fires, with a house fire along Manns Chapel Road killing two residents in April and fire at a Pittsboro golf course destroying a building and fleet of golf carts on May 8. Much of North Carolina — including Orange and Chatham counties — remains in severe drought conditions, despite recent rain helping enough to lift both local and statewide burn bans.
This is a developing story and will be updated further.
