Carolina earned one of its best results of the 2024 season on Sunday night in California, defeating No. 7 Stanford 2-1 on the road.
Bertil Hansen capitalized on a Cardinal giveaway in the 38th minute to open the scoring, and Luke Hille doubled the lead in the 68th minute after a cross from Andrew Czech grazed the frame of the Stanford goal. Hansen and Hille accounted for two of only three shots on goal for the Tar Heels all night, but made the most of their chances. Carolina had just seven total shots, compared with 13 for Stanford. UNC goalkeeper Andrew Cordes made three saves, keeping the Cardinal off the scoreboard until the 89th minute.
The win is UNC’s first in ACC play since September 28. It also keeps Carolina above Stanford in the ACC standings. With a 4-2-1 league record and 13 points, the Tar Heels sit in third place behind Pitt (18 points) and Clemson (15). Stanford and Duke – both of whom have lost to Carolina – are tied for fourth place with 12.
The Tar Heels are 9-2-4 overall on the season. Carolina will close out its regular season schedule on Friday, November 1 when it hosts Boston College at Dorrance Field at 7:30 p.m.
