Through driving rain, UNC played to a 0-0 draw with No. 12 Virginia in Charlottesville Saturday night. The Tar Heels have now tied each of their four ACC matches so far, with two of those being scoreless draws.
Virginia tripled Carolina’s total shot output 15-5, though only two of the Cavaliers’ shots were on target. UNC goalkeeper Andrew Cordes saved both to ensure the fourth clean sheet of the season for the Tar Heels. On the UNC side, Luca Nikolai fired Carolina’s only shot on target in the 48th minute. The Tar Heel offense continued to manufacture chances throughout the second half, but shots from Nacho Abeal in the 58th minute and Lucas Ross in the 86th missed the mark. Virginia’s last chance came in the 87th minute, when the Cavaliers’ Nicholas Simmonds fired just wide of Cordes’ net.
The UNC defense has allowed just two total goals in its last five matches since the Tar Heels suffered their only loss of the season at Charleston on September 1. Saturday’s match was the first time all season Virginia had been held without a goal.
UNC is now 4-1-4 overall and 0-0-4 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will stay on the road next week when they visit Louisville Friday, October 3 at 6 p.m.
