It’s the last week of the month, so most elected local boards have the week off – but there are still a handful of meetings scheduled this week, with important items on their agendas. In Hillsborough, the town board will discuss pedestrian and bicycle safety on the Route 70 bypass, after a recent crash that left one child dead. And in Chatham County, county commissioners will meet jointly with the Pittsboro town board to discuss issues ranging from property revaluation to downtown development to the recent water/sewer merger with Sanford.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is holding a work session at 7 p.m. Monday, October 28. Board members will consider a proposal (amended by town staffers) to allow freestanding accessory dwellings on private streets; in addition, they’ll discuss safety concerns on the Route 70 bypass, following the recent death of a child who was struck and killed while walking along the road. And there is one other agenda item: an update from Town Commissioner Matt Hughes, who was recently cited for DWI for the second time in as many years. Click here for the full agenda.

Also on Monday, October 28, Chatham County Commissioners are meeting jointly with the Pittsboro town board, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Agriculture & Conference Center on Route 64. Board members will discuss their recent decisions to merge the town and county’s water/sewer system with Sanford’s TriRiver system; in addition, the boards will receive presentations on property revaluation, possible mixed-use developments on various properties in Pittsboro (with an eye to keeping major streets visually appealing as well), and the latest on efforts – which are nearing the finish line – to update the county’s Unified Development Ordinance. Finally, Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, October 28, with an agenda that includes a public hearing on next year’s property revaluation. Click here for the full agenda.
