A goal from Gabriel Bracken Serra in the 10th minute was all UNC needed to pick up a 1-0 win at Louisville Friday night. The win is Carolina’s first in ACC play this season and extends the Tar Heels’ unbeaten run to six matches (two wins, four draws).
Serra was in the right place at the right time to head in a picture-perfect cross from Andrew Czech for the night’s only goal. It’s the fourth time Serra has found the back of the net this season, which leads the team. Carolina continued to control play throughout the first half and was initially awarded a penalty kick after a Louisville handball in the box in the 34th minute, but the penalty was waved off after video review.
The Cardinals threatened to equalize in the second half with a pair of shots on goal in rapid succession in the 64th minute, but UNC goalkeeper Andrew Cordes saved both. Louisville’s last chance to salvage a draw came in the 87th minute, but Cordes again stood tall to preserve the clean sheet. The 1-0 win is UNC’s second consecutive clean sheet, third in the last four matches and fifth overall this season.
At 5-4-1 overall and 1-0-4 in ACC play, the Tar Heels will play the first of three consecutive non-conference matches next Tuesday, October 7 at 7 p.m. when they visit Lipscomb in Nashville.
