Damage and flooding from Tropical Storm Debby has forced the closure of several roads and intersections around the Chapel Hill and Carrboro areas. Here is a complete list of traffic changes, which will be updated throughout the day.

  • The section of Umstead Drive near Umstead Park is closed due to flooding.
  • The section of Cleland Drive between its intersections with Rogerson Drive and Hamilton Road is closed due to flooding.
  • Ridge Road on the UNC campus is closed. The RU route of Chapel Hill Transit will not serve stops on Ridge Road or South Road, and will instead travel in both directions on Skipper Bowles Drive and Manning Drive, turn north on South Columbia Street and rejoin its normal route at South Road and Raleigh Street.
  • The section of Jones Ferry Road between its intersections with Old Fayetteville Road and Crystal Springs Court is closed. The Town of Carrboro recommends using Demarcus Church Road as a detour.
  • Shelton Street near the intersection of Elm Street in Carrboro closed for Thursday morning due to a downed tree.

The town governments are urging motorists and pedestrians to not attempt to drive or walk through high water.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh forecasts approximately 5-10 inches of rain to fall in the Triangle on Thursday and Friday as a result of the tropical storm system, which made landfall in Florida as a hurricane before dipping back into the Atlantic Ocean to regain strength. North Carolina and Orange County have declared states of emergency, and the Triangle region is under a flood watch until Friday night.
