Road work by the North Carolina Department of Transportation is nearing for Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro, with a start date now announced by the state and local governments.
A release through the Town of Carrboro on Monday said Jones Ferry Road from the intersection of West Main Street to the intersection at Old Fayetteville Road will have temporary lane closures for overnight paving starting on Sunday, July 14. The town said, weather permitting, the roadwork is anticipated to be finished within two weeks.
The project includes NCDOT’s regular milling, micro-milling, paving, and painting of pavement markings done every decade. But the project will also update and add bicycle lanes to Jones Ferry Road. A new westbound lane will be added after NCDOT finished reconfigurations to the medians and westbound vehicle lanes in February. The addition will run from Davie Street to the Willow Creek Shopping Center. The street already has an eastbound lane that begins at the Ashbrook Apartments complex, but its buffers were temporarily removed earlier in the year and it lacks designated markings past Barnes Street.
The addition represents a key step for the Town of Carrboro, which had identified Jones Ferry Road as a critical corridor that needed updated infrastructure for cyclists in its 2021 Bicycle Plan update.
According to the town and NCDOT, the milling and repaving work will run from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays during the project’s timeline. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to stay alert while traveling in the area and to prepare for potential delays from lane closures until the roadwork is complete.
