Chapel Hill Police Share Details on Increase of Car Break-ins

Over the last three months, there has been a rise in reported car break-ins, according to Chapel Hill Police.

The department shared a release on Thursday, saying it received 122 reports of cars being broken into over that time period. Police said most of the break-ins happened overnight and in residential areas of town. Eleven break-ins happened overnight Wednesday as well.

Out of the 122 reported break-ins, at least 70 vehicles were unlocked when they were accessed.

The message to Chapel Hill community members said investigators are “working diligently to identify suspects in these cases.”

Because of this rise, the police department shared tips with the public on how to reduce the risk of a car getting broken into — with the top one being to always lock car doors and windows whenever away from the vehicle. Chapel Hill Police also advised against leaving valuable items, like wallets, cellphones or laptops, in plain sight from outside the car. Additional security measures can be taken, like installing car alarm system or tracking device — but police said parking in well-lit areas or near security cameras could also potentially keep thieves away from checking vehicles.

“We want to remind everyone to take the simple but necessary precautions to protect their property and themselves,” said Community Services Sergeant Charlie Pardo. “The Guardians of the Hill are committed to keeping our community safe, but we need your help to achieve this goal together.”
