Chapel Hill gained its newest supermarket: Aldi is now open in Eastgate Crossing.
Aldi states its mission as quality and affordability. “Our priority focus is saving people money on the food and products they want most, and we do this by offering shoppers a curated selection of ALDI-exclusive brands,” the brand states.
The Chapel Hill location is in the same plaza as a Trader Joes. The Aldi is located at 1800 East Franklin Street in Suite 13. It is next to the Eastgate Dollar Tree and Kipos Greek Taverna.

The Chapel Hill Aldi is in what was the former Stein Mart. The Stein Mart company filed for bankruptcy in August 2020. Plans for the Eastgate Crossing Aldi were approved in June 2021 by the Community Design Commission.
Orange County records showed Aldi had signed a ten-year lease with Eastgate’s owner in April of that year. Aldi has the chance to renew that lease in five-year increments over the next 35 years.
According Aldi’s website, more than 90% of the store consists of Aldi-exclusive products.
“ALDI exclusive brands allow us to provide the same high-quality product without passing on all of the hidden costs associated with the national brands, such as marketing and advertising,” the company states. “Recently, we have added a limited selection of national brands in addition to our ALDI exclusive brands. We made this decision in response to feedback from our customers, who have strong brand preferences, yet would like to complete more of their grocery shopping at ALDI. We also may carry a national brand if we are not able to procure an exclusive brand product that meets or exceeds the quality and taste of the national brand.”

Aldi collects a 25-cent deposit for shopping cart use as the company does not hire employees to find and return carts. The charge is returned to the customer when they bring their cart back to the corral.
Aldi has 91 locations in North Carolina. The previous closest Aldi was located in Durham off Highway 751.
The Chapel Hill location is open every day from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
