One of the most highly sought-after basketball recruits in the country won’t be coming to Chapel Hill after all. G.G. Jackson, rated as a five-star prospect by 247 Sports and the top player in his class, decommitted from head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels Thursday night. Experts believe Jackson will now reclassify into the class of 2022 commit to his hometown school, South Carolina.
Jackson originally announced his commitment to the Tar Heels in April. This summer, he has starred with Team USA and in the Top 100 High School Basketball Camp, where the outlet On3 named him the event’s MVP. Momentum had been steadily building ever since then for Jackson’s eventual decommitment, so much so that UNC began sending scholarship offers to other players of Jackson’s type in the 2023 class.
South Carolina was one of Jackson’s finalists when he originally committed, though many believe the Gamecocks’ firing of former head coach Frank Martin affected his decision. Martin has since been hired at Massachusetts, which promptly sent Jackson a scholarship offer. South Carolina, meanwhile, has since hired former Chattanooga head coach Lamont Paris, who has kept up his recruitment of Jackson even after Jackson’s commitment to UNC.
Carolina now has just one commitment from the 2023 class: five-star guard Simeon Wilcher, rated as a top-20 player nationally.
