With the UNC men’s basketball program’s incoming freshmen arriving on campus this week for summer classes and workouts, the program officially announced the jersey numbers each would be wearing during their time at Carolina.
Will Shaver, who spent the spring semester of this past season with the Tar Heels in a redshirt role, will wear No. 21. Shaver is a three-star center from Birmingham, AL. He is the first UNC player from the state of Alabama since Garrison Brooks. Shaver is also the first Tar Heel to wear No. 21 since Sterling Manley, whose time in Chapel Hill was defined by numerous injuries which kept him sidelined for the majority of his career. Manley left the program after the 2020-21 season.
Tyler Nickel will wear No. 24. Nickel arrives as a four-star wing from Elkton, VA. He broke the Virginia High School League scoring record during his time with East Rockingham High School, and is rated as the No. 76 player in his class, according to 247 Sports. He’ll take over the No. 24 jersey after Kerwin Walton, who wore it during the 2021-22 season, transferred to Texas Tech.
Jalen Washington will wear No. 13. Washington is a six-foot, nine-inch center from Gary, IN, who unfortunately missed the final year of his high school career due to a knee injury. Head coach Hubert Davis said he expects Washington to be ready for 5-on-5 practice by August. Washington’s No. 13 has a bit of a checkered past in recent years, as each of the last three players to have worn it (Jeremiah Francis in 2019-20, Walker Kessler in 2020-21 and Dawson Garcia in 2021-22) transferred after just one season in Chapel Hill.
Finally, Seth Trimble will wear No. 0. Trimble, a point guard from Menomonee Falls, WI, is the highest-rated recruit in Carolina’s 2022 class, with 247 Sports ranking him as the No. 28 player in his class. Trimble is the younger brother of former Tar Heel J.P. Tokoto, who wore both No. 25 and No. 13 during his time in Chapel Hill. Trimble will take over No. 0 from Anthony Harris, who transferred to Rhode Island after three seasons with the Tar Heels.
