The Town of Carrboro is suspending its indoor recreation programs for the next few weeks, citing the ongoing surge in local COVID-19 cases.

The town government shared an alert Wednesday afternoon saying its Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Resources Department will not hold indoor programs and is suspending reservations through Sunday, January 30. The recent increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations tied to the omicron variant of the virus drove the decision, according to the release.

Carrboro said participants who are currently signed up for programs and events through the department will be contacted directly by staff, who will share updates on possible rescheduling options. The local government said people who paid for programs that are unable to be be rescheduled will received prorated account credits, while administrative fees for reservations and events will be waived.

“The town will continue to work with local officials to monitor the current public health situation and additional schedule updates will be provided as needed,” said the town.

While Orange County has one of the highest vaccination rates among counties in North Carolina, the spread of COVID-19 is still reflected in the latest public health data. The county tallied more than 1,400 cases in the last seven days, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which is a slight decrease from the cases added in the prior week. Hospitalizations in the community, however, have increased and the county’s percentage of positive COVID-19 tests remains close to 19 percent.

To help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, all of Orange County’s local governments have an indoor mask mandate, which has been in place since August 2021.
