Following the UNC women’s basketball team’s ninth consecutive win to open the season Sunday, the Tar Heels will now see a number beside their name. Carolina made its season debut in the AP Top 25 poll Monday afternoon, appearing at No. 25 in the latest rankings.
It is the first time Carolina has appeared in the AP Poll since the beginning of the 2015-16 season. UNC had previously made its season debut in the Coaches Poll last week, at No. 24. To view the full AP poll, click here.
On the strength of its 9-0 start and +326 point differential, Carolina remains at No. 2 in the NCAA’s NET rating system, ahead of No. 3 NC State and behind only No. 1 South Carolina. The Gamecocks are the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation in all major polls.
UNC ranks No. 5 in the country in both scoring offense (84.6 points per game) and scoring defense (48.3 points allowed per game), with its average scoring margin of 36.2 ranking No. 2, behind only Coastal Carolina. Carolina also ranks No. 8 in the country in total rebounds per game, No. 4 in rebound margin, No. 5 in three-point percentage and No. 14 in overall field goal percentage.
Five of Carolina’s nine wins have come away from Carmichael Arena, including three true road victories, two of which came over Power 5 opponents.
The Tar Heels will have a chance to defend their ranking on Wednesday night when Jacksonville visits Chapel Hill. Carolina will then travel to Boston College on Sunday to open up ACC play, before one final non-conference matchup with Alabama State the following Tuesday.
