The Chi Alpha Sigma society honors student-athletes who succeed both academically and athletically at UNC. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.4 GPA through at least three years and letter in their respective sport. Sixty-three Tar Heels were inducted into the society on Wednesday.
Former women’s lacrosse star Katie Hoeg, already a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, also won the society’s Nick Mourouzis Postgraduate Scholarship.
To win the $3,500 award, student-athletes must have exhausted their NCAA eligibility and be enrolled in a graduate program the following year. Hoeg, who graduated from UNC in 2021, is beginning graduate studies at UNC’s Adams School of Dentistry after majoring in chemistry as an undergraduate.
It’s yet another honor for Hoeg, who Tuesday was named one of UNC’s three winners of the Patterson Medal, honoring career athletic achievements at UNC. She has also received postgraduate scholarships from the ACC and the NCAA, and was just the second UNC women’s lacrosse player ever to be named an Academic All-American.
UNC’s full list of 2021 Chi Alpha Sigma inductees can be found here.
Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story reported that Katie Hoeg was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma this year. That is incorrect. She was already a member of the society prior to this year.
