The Diamond Heels scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on their way to an 8-2 win against UNC-Greensboro at Boshamer Stadium Wednesday afternoon. It’s Carolina’s sixth consecutive win.
The five-run inning broke open what had been a close game. UNC jumped in front in the first inning on an Owen Hull RBI single and a fielding error by the Spartans, but UNC-Greensboro answered in the fourth with a two-RBI single against Carolina’s Walker McDuffie. The score stayed tied at 2-2 until the sixth, when Erik Paulsen drove in Jake Schaffner from second base with a single.
The rally in the seventh began with a bang, as Rom Kellis followed up a Colin Hynek double with his first home run of the season.
After a Cooper Nicholson walk, Tyler Howe singled to put runners on the corners. Nicholson would then score on a passed ball, while Howe would come around himself on a Gavin Gallaher double. Gallaher scored the fifth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
On the mound, six UNC pitchers combined to allow just five Spartan hits. Boston Flannery earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Matthew Matthijs and Jackson Rose combined to record the final seven outs of the game.
With Wednesday’s win, Carolina is now 18-3-1 overall. The Diamond Heels will return to action Friday when they host Louisville in the first game of a three-game series in Chapel Hill. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
