UNC golfer Peter Fountain earned a spot on the 2021 All-Nicklaus team this week, a first for the Tar Heel program.

The rising sophomore was named to the team, which is chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America, on Thursday. It is the first time a UNC golfer has been added to the All-Nicklaus Team since the list began in 2008.

Fountain is a rising star within the program, having won the ACC Championship during his freshman season. He was given the conference’s Freshman of the Year award, as well as first-team All-America honors by the GCAA and Golfweek. It marked the first time a Carolina golfer earned a first-team All-America selection since 2003 and the first in the program’s entire history to earn it as a first-year athlete.

The All-Nicklaus team is named after golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. The family has some ties to the UNC program: Nicklaus’ son, Jackie Nicklaus, played for the Tar Heels from 1981 through 1985.

UNC men’s golf finished tied for fifth place at the NCAA Championship at the end of the 2020-21 season, the program’s best finish since 1993, partially thanks to Fountain’s play.
